Who remembers these commercials?
Did they stimulate you growing up? Did they make you run down the toy aisle screaming at your Mom about how cool you would be if you had them?
Well, if you did, then you and I have something in common. G.I. Joes were a huge hit in toy stores back in the 80's when I was growing up. Neighborhood kids would have epic G.I. Joe battles using tanks, helicopters, jeeps, and fancy jets all of which they had originally seen on TV during the commercial breaks of our favorite cartoon shows. I have moments of euphoric nostalgia when ever I come across one of these commercials on YouTube. It takes be back to a time when kids actually went outside and played. Sure, we had some video game systems like kids do today, but that was usually reserved for after outside play. Gathering up with the neighborhood kids to play war was usually our first thought after stepping foot off the school bus, sometimes the trash talk would start while actually in school. I remember many times at lunch my friends would plot out a game plan for that evenings attack. Another group of neighbor hood kids would do the same. Then that evening it was a full scale war until Moms began calling their youngsters in for dinner. It was a great time to be a kid, something that most kids now a days miss out on. It is a shame I never stayed in those towns long enough to form life long friendships. I am sure I would have. But, thanks to the internet and someone's love for a time long past, I get to go back and watch some of those commercials that fueled my imagination and relive some of those great times playing in the mud, snow, and dirt all while yelling....YOOOOO! JOE!!!!
